Playtime

Every day just seems better than the next. We're so grateful to have Jack as part of our family. It feels like he's been here for years. We're actually on the eve of our one month anniversary. We've learned so much about Jack. We know the meaning of his little noises and his non-verbal gesturing. I can't wait to find out what his surgery will hold. I know his bravery and our love will give him the strength to do just about anything he needs.

Day at the Park

Jack hits the slides with the same energy and enthusiasm we saw in the park at Shamian Island in Guangzhou. Although here he doesn't share the park equipment with adults exercising. Its all kids in the US.

A thoughtful moment inside the giant toy truck. Jack shows us his driving skills. He has the Chinese driver's daring for sure. He spins the steering wheel around and around!

It's hard to believe that two weeks ago we were packing our suitcases to head home from China. Jack is filled with a joy that is contagious. We're grateful to have him as part of our family. He makes everyone around him smile. He's spent his days with "BaBa" - Cantonese for father. They have developed good routines for each day. They start the morning with a trip to Starbucks, followed by a walk on the beach. Jack has adapted to the house and his surrounds much better than Craig and I did in China. Children are so incredible.

Father & Son

Jack seems like he has been part of the family for years. He and Craig continue to bond. Jack and Hunter are getting to know each other. Jack likes to watch us hug each other and Hunter. He directs us from one person to the next to hug, laughing as we go back and forth. Craig says we are his dancing monkeys.

I had to travel for two days last week. This picture reflects the bonding while I was away.

We're Home!

We are home safe. Jack flew better than most adults and we are so proud. We received a wonderful reception in Orlando from Hunter. Jack reached for Hunter immediately and has really taken to him.

When we aren't exhausted we will post pictures. In the meantime check out www.hawksbrother.blogspot.com for some pictures.

Unexpected Hello from China

We are in the first class lounge for China Southern and it has a great connection. Although all the buttons are Chinese characters, I know my way around blogger well enough. We moved through security very well. Our passport inspection was the most thorough and serious part of the entire trip. Jack with his cute little wave couldn't even prompt a smile from the screeners.

We take off in about three hours. Its super smoggy tonight so we are hoping that doesn't become a factor in our departure.

Love to everyone,

Caroline

We're heading home!

We are finishing our last round of packing in our hotel in Guangzhou. Craig ran downstairs to buy a suitcase because we've filled the extra duffle bag we brought. We bought a few fragile items that we just don't want to cramp into suitcases.

We've had an amazing experience on the other side of the world I wouldn't trade for anything. The sights, smells and people are forever in our memories. But, its true that the heart grows fonder in absence. We appreciate the comfort and ease of life in the United States. And most important, we can't wait to come home to those we love so much!

See you all very soon.

Love,

Caroline, Craig and Jack

(We will be in Orlando around 11 am on Sunday!)

Toy Market, Massage and the VISA

Yesterday and today have blurred a little for us. We didn't do much significant yesterday other than shop. We did a full day of hunting for bargins (and things we thought people would actually like). We went to the toy market, which was like being trapped in a multi-story Dollar Store/Flea Market. Then we went to the electronics market, where Jack and I ducked into a corner while Craig shopped. He ended up not purchasing anything because of concerns about warranties.

Once we got back to the hotel, Mandy took Karyn and I for a Chinese massage. It was a funny experience, certainly not relaxing. The massage flat rate was 68 RMB (less than $10), however for a clean sheet it was an additional 5 RMB. We were also told we could get a shirt and shorts for another 5 RMB to wear during the massage. We elected to get that as well. I went into a small bathroom down the hall to change and Karyn stayed in the room to change. After I switched shirts, I realized changing pants would be challenging because it was not a "western" bathroom, aka hole in the floor. When I went back to the massage room Karyn had switched her pants. Mandy looked at both of us very strangely. Apparently we were supposed to put the shirt and shorts on over our clothes. OOOPS!

The massage itself was a series of pokes and tugs (and bizzare contortions for me). Since Karyn and I were in the same room I could hear that her massage sounded like she was getting beaten up. Her massage therapist was doing a pounding version of massage while mine thought she would test how limber I was. At one point I really thought my foot would touch the back of my head. Once the massage was over and the ladies left, Karyn and I sat up and just cracked up. It was too bizzare, but worth the experience for sure.

The most important thing about today was getting Jack's visa. It was a relatively simple process, which had been built up more than necessary. But, we have all the paperwork in hand to flight home tomorrow night. We are so ready to be home!

[SPECIAL NOTE TO HUNTER: We can't wait to see you at the airport on Sunday. It has been so hard to be away from you for so long. I just want to hug you and never let go!]

Lotus Hill - The Stone Forest

This morning we took a cab about an hour outside Guangzhou to see the Lotus Hill Stone Forest. The weather has gotten unexpectedly cold. Today's high was 43F. Last night when we learned it was going to get cold we bought Jack a coat. I picked up a coat for myself this morning outside the hotel for $8US. Brrrrrrrrrr - Jack got very bundled up.

[HAWK'S SNEAK PEEK AT A PRESENT: Here is an artisan making a present for you Hunter. I wonder what it could be??]
This statue of the "Sea Goddess of Mercy" is the world's largest foil covered bronze statue. Its 40.88 meters tall or about 134 feet.
This is a wishing tree. People have taken red ribbons and written their wished on them. They are then tossed into the tree to grant them.

Craig made a few wishes for our family. Getting them to stay in the tree was harder than it looked. In this picture you can see a little knot tied at the end to give it some weight. It took about six tries. I told him he was earning his wishes.

Here is Mr. Grumpy waking up prematurely from a stroller snooze. He didn't cheer up until we left a few hours later.
Jack insisted on being carried. This picture summarizes the entire park. It was all stairs, so the stroller didn't help.

A brief moment of quiet in the stone forest. By this point my legs were vibrating from walking up and down the stairs. He doesn't hold on to me like Hunter would. He's like carrying a sack of potatoes.
Despite his fussing, it really was a beautiful place to walk.

The Process of the Jade Bracelet

At the temple, there was a small shop selling items blessed. Craig purchased a small wooden bead bracelet. I made a bigger, potential lifelong choice. I bought a jade bracelet. I didn't know at the time that putting a jade bracelet on in a tradition Chinese way is more significant than it looks. Two women soaped up my arm, then worked it back and forth until it went onto my wrist. Apparently, Chinese women think its more attractive when the bracelet is tight on the wrist. It is! I think this should be a lesson for the American jewelry industry. When it doesn't fit, soap it up and force it on.

Six Banyan Temple Blessing

Built in the 1450s, its is one of the best precserved historical monuments in China. The ancient architecture contrasts sharply with the modern sky-scrapers that surround it.

A monk at the temple bestowed a blessing on Jack. He chanted and sprinkled something on Jack's forehead.

Just after the monk posed for this picture, his cell phone rang. Craig insists that his ringer was the Mexican Hat Dance or the Dukes of Hazzard song.

Shamian Island Park

We enjoyed walking around Shamian Island. We found a cute little park that Jack loved. Kids from the nearby school liked playing with him.

He is a sliding man!
Another smile caught on camera when he wasn't looking.

This park is enjoyed by children as well as adults. After we had played on this swivel seat for awhile I noticed a woman was waiting her turn. We had to share with the grown ups too.

There are these bronze statues all over Shamian Island . I can't imagine what the translation on this one could be??

A SMILE ON CAMERA!

We did it! We captured the smile on film. Jack smiles all the time, but he gets very upset every time we get the camera out. We've heard similiar things from other families. We were in a Thai restaurant on Shamian Island near the White Swan hotel.

Visa Medical Check Up

Today was Jack's Visa medical check up, which is required to issue him the visa to enter the US. Once he gets to the US he will be a citizen. In this picture, Craig is carrying him on the bridge to Shamian Island where the medical center is located. First we got a quick picture taken for the visa paperwork.

The medical check up stinks. There is no way to make it sound any good. You are cramped up in a tiny room with three medical stations. There is no order (because there are no "real" lines in China). So, each station is just a free-for-all of who gets the paper into the doctor's hand first. Jack was weighed - 25 lbs. and measured for height. The doctor didn't have a long enough measuring device for Jack. All we know is that he is over 85 cm. He also had his hearing and vision checked.

Craig and Andy hung out while the ladies worked the "lines". Jack thinks of Andy as the guy who gives the high fives. Andy has offered to make us a video of him putting his hand up for a five so Jack can do it to the TV.

Last was the full body exam where they had to take off his little outfit. He hated that part, but was quick to recover.

Recovery for Kempfs means....STARBUCKS!!!!

And now, your moment of Zen.

Craig's Musings from Guangzhou

"Dignity, thy name is 'Chinese dude in a metal chicken suit with a horn and tiny hat'."

"Jack and his Porsche Boxster car he picked out at the 'Woman & Baby Store' while Caroline dreams of a land without poop smell."

"Should I feel guilty that I complain my Suburban is too small?"

"This is one of the only wild birds we've seen. It was on the rooftop garden at our hotel in Guangzhou."

Last Night in Nanning

After finally making it back to Nanning, we got dropped off for a final night at Pizza Hut. Nothing here takes quite like it should. I ended up trying to have ice cream for dinner because I couldn't eat another poor attempt to make cheese pizza.
After dinner we saw all the people preparing for the Lantern Festival, which we believe is similiar to Valentine's Day in the US. In Pizza Hut they were playing the Wedding March on a loop. (good times).

This is the government center in Nanning. We've learned that people gather here and do different outdoor activities like roller blading, badmitton and kite flying.
